Protecting the Eastern Edge

Heatherwood Station is located in the Heatherwood/Hill-top Country Store neighborhood in eastern northeast Leon County. It extends the department's reach to the southeastern rural sections of our service area, providing vital coverage to growing residential pockets, wooded terrain, and areas near major roads like Mahan Drive extensions and surrounding countryside.

History

Heatherwood Station was established as part of the department's expansion following the 1991 merger, helping fill gaps in response times for the more distant eastern edges of the original Miccosukee territory. Built to support the increasing population in this area—including homes near the popular Hilltop Country Store (a local landmark for groceries, food, and community stops)—the station reflects MVFR's commitment to growing with the community. Like our other stations, it has been supported by volunteer efforts, donations, and local involvement to ensure reliable protection where it's needed most.

Territory & Importance

This station covers the eastern and southeastern portions of our 98–165 square mile district, including the Heatherwood subdivision, nearby rural roads, and overlapping zones with neighboring areas. This region features a mix of residential developments, open fields, dense woods, and some harder-to-access properties—making a dedicated local station essential for quick response to fires, medical calls, and rescues. With volunteers often living in or near the neighborhood, Heatherwood Station delivers fast turnout times, helping bridge the gap to headquarters and preventing longer delays in this expanding part of the county.

Apparatus & Capabilities

Heatherwood Station primarily houses a pumper apparatus (with a 3000 gallon capacity), along with equipment focused on rapid wildland suppression, medical response, and light rescue needs. It stores tools like chainsaws, backpack pumps, Indian tanks, and medical supplies to handle the area's common vegetation fires and rural emergencies. During high-risk periods like dry seasons or prescribed burns, this station remains active for containing fires before they spread toward homes.

Community Hub

The proximity to the Hilltop Country Store makes it a convenient point for our established partnership, fire prevention education, or for getting involved—strengthening ties in this friendly, rural pocket of northeast Leon County.
